The idea of detoxification is everywhere in wellness culture — from juice cleanses to infrared saunas and yoga poses that promise to “wring out toxins.” But how does the body actually remove harmful substances, and where do practices like twisting yoga poses fit into that process? Let’s take a closer look.
How the Body Naturally Detoxifies
Before we talk about yoga twists, it’s essential to understand that detoxification is happening inside you all the time. Your body is equipped with an intricate, self-sustaining cleansing system:
- Liver – Your body’s primary detox organ. The liver filters blood, processes toxins, and changes harmful substances into forms that can be safely excreted.
- Kidneys – Filter the blood and excrete waste products through urine, also balancing fluids and electrolytes.
- Lungs – Release waste like carbon dioxide and filter some airborne particles.
- Digestive System – Carries waste out; vomiting and diarrhea act as emergency expulsion mechanisms for ingested toxins.
- Skin – Plays a minor detox role through sweat.
Support for this system comes from simple habits like staying hydrated, eating fiber-rich and antioxidant-containing foods, sleeping well, and avoiding unnecessary toxin exposures (such as excess alcohol consumption).
Yoga Twists and “Detox” — Myth vs. Supportive Reality
In yoga, twisting poses — think revolved triangle pose or seated spinal twists — are often described as “wringing out toxins” from the body. The imagery is compelling, but the science paints a more nuanced picture.
Here’s what actually happens in a twist:
- Organ Stimulation: Twists compress and release your abdomen, gently massaging organs like the liver, stomach, and intestines. This supports healthy digestion and may reduce bloating or constipation.
- Circulation Boost: Twists may temporarily restrict blood flow to particular areas and then restore it when you release the pose. I’ll talk more about this phenomenon — called reactive hyperemia — a bit later.
- Lymphatic Movement: By aiding circulation and movement, twists can help stimulate the lymphatic system, which plays a role in immune defense and waste removal.
Twists don’t literally squeeze toxins out of your body. Instead, they support your body’s existing detoxification systems — mostly by helping digestion, improving circulation, and encouraging relaxation, which in turn benefits overall health.
Reactive Hyperemia: The Science Behind the “Fresh Blood” Feeling
You know that energizing rush you feel after coming out of a deep twist or stretch? That might be reactive hyperemia. This is a real, well-documented physiological process:
- When an area is compressed, blood flow slows or stops briefly
- Oxygen levels drop, and metabolic byproducts build up
- Once the restriction is released, blood vessels widen, and there’s a surge of oxygenated blood rushing back into the area
Reactive hyperemia is usually seen in clinical situations such as the release of a tourniquet after a blood draw or restoring blood flow after a surgery.
In the context of yoga twists, when you rotate and compress the abdomen and surrounding tissues, blood flow to some blood vessels in that area may temporarily be reduced. Upon releasing the twist, those vessels can experience a reactive hyperemia effect—a rebound surge of fresh, oxygen-rich blood to the tissues. However, the evidence specifically confirming reactive hyperemia caused by twisting yoga poses is limited and inferred mainly by applying what we know about how the body works – basically, we haven’t been able to prove or disprove that twisting yoga poses produce this effect in everyone.
The Bottom Line
Your body is built to detox 24/7 through the liver, kidneys, lungs, digestive system, and skin. Yoga twists can play a supportive role by improving digestive health, circulation, and lymphatic movement — all of which indirectly aid the body’s natural purification processes. Think of twisting poses not as your detox system, but as a tune-up that helps keep the system running smoothly.
God’s Grace in Our Body’s Built-In Detox System
Your body tells a beautiful story of God’s creativity. Within you are miraculous systems working 24/7 to purify and protect: the liver, kidneys, lungs, digestive tract, and even your skin are all actively cleansing and renewing. These organs reflect the wisdom of our Creator, sustaining life by filtering and removing what would harm us.
Our faith teaches that ultimate healing comes through God’s grace (James 5:14-15). Yet, God also invites us to steward our bodies wisely (1 Corinthians 10:31), and he calls them temples of his Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 3:16-17). Movement, rest, and nourishment are not merely physical activities; they are expressions of devotion and worship as we honor God’s design and care for our bodies.
So the next time you roll out your mat, enjoy those deep, satisfying twists. They won’t magically “wring out” toxins. Yet, they will help you feel more alive, more mobile, and more grateful for the body that God has entrusted to you.
