The Heart Chakra, known as Anahata in Sanskrit, is the fourth of the seven primary chakras. It is located near the heart towards the center of the chest and is often symbolized by a green twelve-petaled lotus flower.
Functions: The Sacral Chakra is associated with love, compassion, forgiveness, and self-acceptance. It governs our ability to give and receive love and helps us let go of past hurts. When balanced, we are empathetic, and compassionate, don’t dwell on past hurts, and have an integrated mind, body, spirit, and soul. When imbalanced, we might focus too much on people-pleasing activities, exhibit codependence, neglect our own needs for the sake of others, have difficulty making connections, feel lonely, or experience challenges expressing love and compassion.
Health and Wellness: Physically, this chakra is associated with the heart, lungs, circulatory system, and thymus gland.
Yoga Poses That Affect The Heart Chakra
Yoga poses that open the chest, strengthen the back, and encourage deep breathing are particularly beneficial for the areas addressed by the Heart Chakra. Here are some yoga poses that affect the heart chakra:
Upward-Facing Dog (Urdhva Mukha Svanasana)
This pose opens the chest and strengthens the back and arms. Think about broadening across the chest and collar bones to hone in on the heart-opening aspect of this pose.
Extended Puppy Pose (Uttana Shishosana)
This pose opens the chest and shoulders while stretching the spine, promoting relaxation and emotional release.
Fish Pose (Matsyasana)
This deep backbend opens the Heart and Throat Chakras, promoting emotional expression and vulnerability. For a supported version of this pose, use a bolster or blocks and enjoy the benefits for up to five minutes.
Cow Face Pose (Gomukhasana)
This pose opens the shoulders and chest, promoting flexibility and encouraging deep breathing.
Biblical Parallels to the Focus of the Heart Chakra
The Bible provides extensive guidance on love, compassion, and forgiveness. These are fundamental aspects of the Christian life and are grounded in God’s character and commands.

A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this, everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another. John 13:34-35
For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38-39

The Heart Chakra, or Anahata, focuses on how we experience and share love, compassion, and forgiveness, and it helps us find emotional stability. Living with an open heart, sharing God’s love, practicing compassion and forgiveness, and seeking emotional healing can lead to a more fulfilling and spiritually enriched life. By assessing the areas outlined by the Heart Chakra through scripture, we can foster deeper connections, experience emotional wellness, and embody love and compassion in our daily lives.
