One of my life struggles has been seeing myself with the same kindness and love that I extend to others. I’m much more likely to get my mind stuck in a negative loop replaying my past mistakes than I am to encourage myself. One of the best things I’ve done to counteract this is to remind myself of who I am in Christ.

Too often, we believe the lies of the world that try to steal our joy and dim our light. But God’s word speaks louder and stronger, leading us to the truth of who we are in Jesus. We can fight these thoughts or lies from the world by declaring God’s word over ourselves.

Here are a few of the declarations I’ve used over the past few years to “rewire my brain” to think of myself as a child of God rather than someone who is broken. Say these things on repeat to yourself. And if you still don’t believe them, then say them out loud in front of a mirror – it may seem silly, but it helps 🙂!

Lie I used to believe: I am unworthy.

Biblical truth I replaced it with: I am deeply loved, treasured, and made worthy through Christ. God made me unique and rejoices over me (Psalm 139:14; Zephaniah 3:17; 1 Corinthians 7:23).

Lie I used to believe: I am not enough.

Biblical truth I replaced it with: Christ’s strength is perfected in my weakness; He is sufficient, and through Him, I am enough. (2 Corinthians 12:9).

Lie I used to believe: My value is determined by others’ opinions or approval.

Biblical truth I replaced it with: My value comes from being made in God’s image and being dearly loved by Him (Genesis 1:27; Romans 5:8).

Lie I used to believe: My past mistakes or failures define me.

Biblical truth I replaced it with: In Christ, I am forgiven and made new; my identity is not in my past but in God’s redeeming love and forgiveness (2 Corinthians 5:17; Romans 8:1).

Lie I used to believe: I am unloved.

Biblical truth I replaced it with: I am deeply loved. God loves me with an everlasting and unconditional love. (Jeremiah 31:3; Romans 8:38-39 John 3:16, 1 John 4:19)

Recognizing and affirming our identity in Christ changes the way we see ourselves. By countering the lies we often believe with the powerful truths found in Scripture, we change our self-worth to be rooted in Christ rather than ourselves or what others say about us. Each declaration serves as a reminder that we are God’s children, forgiven and loved regardless of our past.

As we speak these truths into our lives, we not only bring healing to our own hearts but also shine brighter in the world around us. As you rewire your self-perception to anchor it in Christ, remember that you are never alone in this fight; God’s love and joy sustain you every step of the way.
