Nurture emotional wellness and faith by learning about the Sacral Chakra and Biblical teachings. Discover yoga poses, affirmations, and prayer prompts.

The Sacral Chakra, Svadhisthana in Sanskrit, is the second of the seven primary chakras. It is located in the abdomen, just below the navel. An orange six-pleated lotus flower often symbolizes this energy point.

Functions: The Sacral Chakra is associated with creativity, emotions, and relationships. It governs our passions and our ability to experience pleasure and express emotions. We can cultivate healthy relationships, emotional stability, and joy when balanced. When imbalanced, we may struggle with emotional swings, overindulgence in pleasures, lack of boundaries, emotional numbness, lack of creativity, or low libido.

Health and Wellness: Physically, this chakra is associated with the reproductive system, urinary system, lower abdomen, lower back, hips, pelvis, and adrenal glands.

Yoga Poses That Affect The Sacral Chakra

Yoga poses that open the hips, engage the pelvic area, and promote fluid movement are particularly effective in balancing and energizing the sacral chakra. Here are some key yoga poses that affect the sacral chakra:

Bound Angle Pose (Baddha Konasana)

This pose opens the hips and groin, enhancing flexibility and circulation in the pelvic area.

Goddess Pose – Horse Pose (Utkata Konasana)

This pose goes by two names in English. Whatever you prefer to call it, the posture strengthens the legs and opens the hips. Practitioners often report feeling powerful in this pose.

Pigeon Pose (Eka Pada Rajakapotasana)

This deep hip opener releases tension in the hips and pelvic region. Longer holds in this pose (up to 5 minutes with props to support) may yield emotional release due to stored tension in the body.

Cat-Cow Pose (Marjaryasana-Bitilasana)

The gentle flow between these two poses enhances the spine’s flexibility and stimulates and opens the sacral area.

Camel Pose (Ustrasana)

This backbend opens the front of the body, including the hips and pelvic area. It can cultivate a sense of openness and release of stress and tension.

Happy Baby Pose (Ananda Balasana)

This playful and gentle posture opens the hips and groin while relieving tension in the lower back.

Biblical Parallels to the Focus of the Sacral Chakra

The Bible provides comprehensive guidance on emotions and relationships, offering wisdom on managing emotions and cultivating healthy, loving relationships. The Bible teaches that emotions should be handled with God’s help and wisdom, and relationships should be characterized by love, respect, and forgiveness.

Scriptures

A tranquil heart gives life to the flesh, but envy makes the bones rot. Proverbs 14:30

A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. Proverbs 15:1

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these. Mark 12:30-31

A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. John 13:34

Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. Ephesians 4:2-3

Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. Colossians 3:12-14

My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires. James 1:19-20
